Uprising at The Lowry

10th May 2015 by Martin Gibbons

Over the past 6 months, Monkeywood have been working with 4 exciting writers, supporting them to develop 4 brand new plays. The brief was simple: write the idea that you’re burning to write. Join us on Wednesday 3rd June at The Lowry Studio to hear extracts from the plays and to help shape their future development.

The plays:

SOAR by Alison Carr
Over one weekend once a year in a seaside town, crowds flock to watch amateur aviators throw themselves off the pier in homemade flying machines. When Simon comes to stay in Claire’s Guest House, two strangers meet who know there is a fine line between flying and falling, sinking and drowning.

THE GIRL FROM WARD FOUR by Becky Prestwich
When Sophie and Richard meet in the Courtyard of an Adolescent Mental Health Unit, they are instantly drawn to each other. But can their fragile romance survive the real world? The play explores perception and reality – what are the stories we tell in order to convince the world we are normal? And what does ‘normal’ even mean?

THE LOCK IN by Hannah Rodger
The night before their wedding Becca and Gary meet up with her sister Sara and new boyfriend Ray for drinks. When their evening is disrupted by a local police incident they find they are not only unable to leave the pub they also incapable of escaping their past too…

KEEPER by Francesca Waite
In a town where everybody knows everybody else’s business and nothing is missed, a man goes missing. As Ruby watches the search parties gather in the broken beam of the lighthouse, she wonders if anyone would even notice if she was gone. KEEPER is about growing up in a small town, community, friendship, belonging and loss.
