FLESH is based on the real experiences of young parents in Manchester, produced by Monkeywood Theatre in association with the Royal Exchange Theatre. FLESH was nominated for Best New Play, Manchester Theatre Awards 2013.

Shannon and Dylan are 16. They’re in love. And they’re having a baby. FLESH is a love story about growing up set in Wythenshawe, Manchester, following two young people as they become parents for the first time.

In summer 2012, Monkeywood spent hundreds of hours with young parents from across Manchester, Trafford and Salford, gathering their true stories, opinions and insights. The stories they told were surprising, moving and heart-stoppingly honest.

The development and tour of FLESH was funded by Arts Council England through Grants for the Arts, The Granada Foundation, Split Infinitive and Warburtons. During 2013/2014 the production toured to The Royal Exchange theatre, Manchester; CAST, Doncaster; The Dukes, Lancaster; Action Transport Theatre at Whitby Hall, Ellesmere Port and Hull Truck Theatre; alongside schools and sixth form colleges.

Reviews

“One of the most exciting theatre companies around...Flesh marks another significant stage in their development. The strength of Flesh is that it is unafraid to be at the same time both searingly honest and touchingly sweet. It is a genuine love story for our times – moving, scary and sad sometimes but also funny and with its smart heart on its sleeve.”

Manchester Theatre Award

“We all really, really enjoyed the play; we thought it was brilliantly acted and the storylines were really gripping and a reflection of what life can be like for many young parents. It was a first experience of theatre for some of our pupils and it was an extremely positive one for all of the girls.”
